Our Mobile Occupational Therapy Process

Mobile occupational therapy offers a structured approach to support individuals with their daily challenges. Through a step-by-step process, we ensure that each client receives personalised care suited to their specific needs.

Initial Consultation

The journey begins with an initial consultation where our therapists meet with the parent or caregiver. This session is crucial for identifying key areas of concern, determining the need for specific assessments and setting priorities for ongoing intervention. It's a foundational step to tailor our services effectively to each client's unique situation.

Assessment Phase

During the assessment phase, our therapists conduct both formal and informal evaluations to gather in-depth information about the client's areas of difficulty. This critical phase helps in refining our understanding and supports the goal-setting process to ensure targeted and effective interventions.

Initial Report and Therapy Plan (Goal Setting)

After assessments, a detailed report is crafted, highlighting the findings and laying out a therapy plan. This plan sets occupational therapy goals for the upcoming months, which are developed and agreed upon in collaboration with both the therapist and the client's family, ensuring that everyone's priorities are aligned.

Intervention

Intervention sessions are central to our approach, involving regular one-on-one interactions with the therapist, typically on a weekly or fortnightly basis. These sessions are complemented by other supportive measures, such as caregiver education, recommendations for environmental adjustments and the use of assistive technology. Additionally, home activities are prescribed to maximise outcomes and maintain progress between sessions.

Evaluation

Every six months, we conduct a thorough review of the therapy plan. Goals are evaluated and achievements are noted, with the therapist deciding if further intervention is necessary. Based on this evaluation, new goals may be introduced or existing ones re-prioritised at the request of the client's family, followed by an updated therapy plan for continued support.

Discharge

The decision to discharge a client from our therapy services is based on several criteria: achievement of all occupational therapy goals, the necessity for alternative specialised interventions or if the family opts to discontinue. We also consider recommending a break or alternative forms of therapy, such as group sessions, depending on the client’s evolving needs.

How We Work

At Youth OT, our approach to occupational therapy is deeply rooted in both individualisation and evidence-based practice. We focus on crafting personalised therapy sessions that are tailored to the unique needs of each client, recognising that therapy can vary significantly from one individual to another. Our therapists are adept at engaging clients through therapeutic techniques that leverage personal strengths and interests.

We integrate clinical insights, relevant research, client preferences and professional expertise to ensure a comprehensive approach throughout all stages of therapy – from assessment to intervention and evaluation. This method helps each client receive the most effective and individualised therapeutic support.

Person

In our mobile occupational therapy, we focus on enhancing the client’s ability to effectively perform daily activities and tasks. Our therapists aim to nurture each client’s personal development with tailored strategies that suit their individual needs and abilities.

Example: Developing Daytime Continence

Assessment: Our therapists conduct a comprehensive occupational analysis to evaluate the client’s functional abilities in daily living tasks. This includes assessing their ability to recognise when they need to use the restroom, communicate these needs, understand bodily functions and develop the motor skills required for independent toileting.

Intervention: We work to strengthen the client’s internal awareness (interoception), improve body awareness, refine motor skills, deepen their understanding of toileting processes and enhance communication abilities for expressing toileting needs effectively.

Environment

We consider the client’s environment and how it impacts their ability to carry out daily tasks. Our goal is to adapt the surroundings to support the client’s success and independence, ensuring the environment complements their abilities.

Example: Developing Daytime Continence

Assessment: Therapists thoroughly assess the physical, social, cultural and institutional environments surrounding the client to identify any barriers that may hinder task completion.

Intervention: We make strategic environmental modifications to meet the client’s needs better. This can include adjusting lighting, increasing support through caregiver assistance, using visual aids for communication, modifying the placement and accessibility of toileting facilities, altering the sensory environment (like scent) and ensuring aids like toilet seats or stools are in the most supportive positions.

Occupation

Our approach involves adapting specific occupational tasks to be more accessible and manageable according to the client’s capabilities.

Example: Developing Daytime Continence

Assessment: Therapists closely observe the specific tasks the client needs to complete, such as independent toilet use within a private setting and associated dressing tasks.

Intervention: We modify tasks to align with the client’s current abilities. This may involve setting more achievable steps, like using a potty with assistance instead of a standard toilet and offering one-on-one support for dressing and undressing. These adjustments ensure that the occupation is more suited to the client’s unique level of functioning.

Choosing the right support for Mobile Occupational Therapy is essential for successful outcomes. At Youth OT, we focus on providing high-quality, client-centred care that promotes independence and overall well-being.

  • Individualised Support: We believe in providing tailored therapy sessions that address each client’s unique needs, preferences and goals. This may help our clients to have a personalised path to better daily functioning.

  • Evidence-Based Practice (EBP): Our approach is grounded in proven research and clinical expertise. We implement the latest evidence-based techniques to ensure that every intervention is effective and outcome-focused.

  • PEO Model: The Person-Environment-Occupation (PEO) model is central to our therapy approach. We consider how an individual's skills, surroundings and daily activities interact to create a balanced and effective treatment plan.

  • Flexible Mobile Services: We bring therapy to you, wherever you are. Our mobile services provide convenient support, whether at home, school or in the community, ensuring that therapy fits seamlessly into your routine.

  • Qualified and Compassionate Therapists: Our team consists of highly trained professionals who are not only skilled in their field but also deeply empathetic. They are committed to helping clients achieve their fullest potential with care and understanding.

  • Goal-Oriented Approach: We work closely with clients and families to set realistic, meaningful goals. Every session is designed to progress toward these goals, ensuring measurable improvements in the client's day-to-day life.
